Break the Chronic Pain Chain!

Break the Chronic Pain Chain!

By Laura Corcoran; RMT

September is Chronic Pain Awareness Month! We want to help you BREAK the CHRONIC PAIN CHAIN!!

Massage can break the cycle of pain. Massage soothes muscle tension, stretches and kneads tight muscles, and calms the nervous system. When muscles relax, pressure on nerves is reduced; alleviating pain.  As your nervous system is relaxing, blood vessels dial ate to increase circulation. Waste products are flushed away and replaced with healing oxygen and nutrients.  Regular massage can renew your energy and provide pleasant feelings of release. This, in turn, could motivate you to move more as your pain is decreased. Fall projects like yard work can aggravate your pain cycle. Massage can be part of your body’s support system.

Laura Corcoran continues to help break the Chronic Pain Chain with 27 years of experience with Therapeutic and Relaxation Massage!

Helping Your Child Return Back To School

Helping Your Child Return Back To School

By Tina Nikolaou

Anxiety can show up in a variety of ways such as;

• Feeling fearful or overwhelmed
• Headaches, trouble sleeping, irritability, or emotional outbursts
• Withdrawn, overly tired, or restless

Stress can’t always be avoided, but we can help to reduce it. Having tools and
strategies ready to help cope with stress is very important so that we and our children
can be less negatively affected. Some tools that can be utilized consist of;

• Accept and validate your child’s emotions
• Help them to find ways to cope with feelings of anxiety
• Deep breathing
• Drink some water
• Count to 10
• Belly breathing
• Trace your hand
• Senses 5-4-3-2-1
• 5 things you see
• 4 things you can touch
• 3 things you can hear
• 2 things you can smell
• 1 thing you can taste
• Help them to find ways to help reduce the stress itself
• Remind your child that they can turn to other people for support, both at home and at
school
• Assure them they are not alone

Talk with your child about returning back to school.

• Who are you looking forward to seeing this year?
• What is one thing you’re hoping to do during this year?
• What are the strategies that really worked for them in previous years?
• How are you feeling about this school year?
• What is something you are excited for?
• Is there anything you feel a bit worried about?
• How can I help you feel comfortable about school?

Summer Stretching

Summer Stretching

By Laura Corcoran; RMT

Summer brings new joys and challenges! You may not have participated in some activities since last year.  Muscles and joints you haven’t used for a while can become sore and painful if you’re not stretching properly.

Try this: Get an elastic band or hair elastic and hold each end between your thumb and pointer fingers in each hand. Stretch until it feels like the band will snap! Then bring the band back to where you started. The ‘snap’ point or ‘end point’ of a stretch is not a point you should try to reach when stretching a muscle!  Remember this if you’re tempted to overstretch to avoid injury.

Stretching Tips

– stretch before and after activities
– don’t overstretch = don’t stretch to the ‘ end point’
– stretch slowly without bouncing and to where you feel a slight easy stretch
– hold the stretch for 15 -20 seconds
– breathing should be slow, deep, and rhythmical

In time, you’ll be able to stretch further and further but never to the ‘ end point’. Developmental stretching reduces tension and will safely increase flexibility.

Soothing Foot Tricks to Try

Soothing Foot Tricks to Try

Stampede stomping, walking or dancing? Try an ice roll!   Fill a water bottle (commercial plastic) 3/4 full of water and put the lid on tightly.  Freeze.  Wrap in a plastic bag or very thin cloth. Place bottle on the floor and while seated,  gently roll under the arch of your foot, back and forth. Repeat 3-5 times or as needed.   You can return to freezer to use another time   Don’t forget to recycle the bottle when you are finished with it!

You can also stretch your toes by pointing down, pointing up towards you, and by grabbing the carpet with your barefoot toes!  Lower leg stretching is very beneficial in elevating foot pain.  Try an Epsom salt bath to reduce metabolic wastes in your legs and feet. You’ll want to enjoy your activities this summer without getting too sore!

Make sure you keep up with your regular massage all summer long!!

Spring is in the air… and so are allergies!

Spring is in the air… and so are allergies!

by Michelle Hagel ND

Seasonal allergy season is here or for some just around the corner. Intolerances are inappropriate immune responses to substances, this can be environmental or food. Allergies and intolerances can present in a variety of different ways. They can manifest as congestion, eye-watering, sneezing, digestive issues, joint pain, skin issues, fatigue, the list goes on and on. The important factor is that substance is causing the immune system to react and inflammation to occur. Individuals that have been suffering from allergies or intolerances for years and trying to avoid them or taking antihistamines to suppress symptoms should be aware there are treatments to eliminate these allergies.

Allergy injections are also offered at the clinic they are a combination that works to bring balance to the body and reduce the over-reaction the body is experiencing when exposed to an allergen. The protocol is generally a series of 3 injections, each injection occurs one week apart. In my clinical experience, individuals start noticing relief of their allergies after the second injection. They do not have any side effects and are a very safe alternative.

Another option for allergies and I would call it the gold standard I use in practice is called NAET. It is an allergy elimination treatment, it works by retraining the body’s immune system to no longer react to those substances. This treatment is very safe and non-invasive it can be used for individuals of any age. To learn more about this treatment please see the article link https://ndnr.com/autoimmuneallergy-medicine/naet-resolving-allergies-sensitivities/

If you or someone you know is tired of using anti-histamines during the spring/summer month or just avoids the outdoors altogether, either of these can be a great option. Stop avoiding and suppressing and start enjoying nature! Wishing everyone a happy and healthy spring!
