Naturopathic medicine is primary health care profession combining effective traditional therapies with current advances in modern medicine to prevent as a whole with the understanding that each person needs a personalized treatment plan aimed at the root cause of what is ailing them without suppressing their signs and symptoms.

We provide direct billing to various insurance companies, so the money doesn’t leave your pocket. If we do not provide direct billing, you will have to submit yourself but still likely you have Naturopathic coverage, so don’t let it go to waste. Naturopathic Doctors offer many services from nutrition counselling and injections, allergy elimination, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Most group plans renew every year in January, so this time of the year is the perfect time to make sure you have used up your benefits! Right now, we are offering packages for acupuncture and NAET treatments (Allergy elimination treatments). Find out if your benefits cover Naturopath and ask us more about how we can help you achieve optimal health.

Simply Nutrition During the Holidays

Simply Nutrition During the Holidays

By Lisa Lin, RMT, HHPR

I am all about simple these days. Running a household, organizing and taking care of my two young daughters, working and getting better at self-care. AND Christmas is coming. This year I thought to myself, “Lisa, you have been on a simplify your life mission for the past couple of years so how do you want the holidays to look and feel this Dec 2017?”. Well, at the top of my list of simple is NUTRITION.

A year ago I graduated from the Academy of Culinary Nutrition, and gained an arsenal of information on eating wholefoods, meal prepping, recipe designing and learning how to teach cooking classes. Where do I use this knowledge the most? In my kitchen at home with my girls. I read a number of foodie blogs, watch Youtube for ideas and get creative when I have time. Most of my creativity has seemed to be needed in how can I serve the healthiest, most fresh, phytonutrient rich food to my family while not making myself crazy. Yes, Christmas holidays will be the yardstick to see what all I’ve learned since I graduated!

Knowing how critical healing foods are in our diet and being so completely inspired by cooking and supporting the body’s healing processes I have had to look at the plain truth – do I try and eat perfectly clean, be the sugar police with my kids or simply let it unfold with conscious intention of what is most important to me.

I know what to eat at dinner parties and holiday functions, based on how I will feel the next day and how to enjoy myself while honoring my body and heart for what they need to be well. Yes, I eat some treats and some decadent foods and all the while I feel so blessed for the love that went into the preparation of those foods. Outside of those occasions, and my coworkers could elaborate, I pack items such as homemade granola bars, soups, green smoothies, green juices, and a big bottle of water to a busy day at Docere. I nourish myself well and don’t terrorize myself over calories, fat grams and sugar content anymore. And my food choices have become peaceful and far more nourishing than a battle over shoulds and shouldn’ts.

What I do to balance things out during the holiday: exercise, meditation, take my vitamins, drink LOTS of water, use my crockpot regularly for homemade stocks and soups, stews in batches to store in my small freezer. I buy organic meats most of the time and will marinate and grill or bake chicken – slice and freeze or pan fry ground bison and add fresh herbs and spices or bake fish. As well I wash, chop and steam/bake fresh vegetables to pair with the meats (no recipe needed – egs. are squashes, yams, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, mushrooms, kale, zucchini, swiss chard), try and bake either muffins or granola bars once a week and pop them in the freezer. Homemade trail mix, fresh fruit and nuts, chia puddings, avocado for basic snacks. Super simple. Busy days? I have backup in the freezer and fresh produce on hand to pair with it. I menu plan once a week and do food prep day before (creating this habit is a must, on a routine that works for you). Then it isn’t an issue for my children and I if we eat out once in a while or attend holiday functions; we feel well in body, mind and spirit.

Happy holidays!

Some Tips to Avoiding that Post Holiday Weight Gain

Some Tips to Avoiding that Post Holiday Weight Gain

The most wonderful time of the year can also be one of the most unhealthy times of the year. Often due to the endless Christmas parties complete with drinks and Christmas baking.

  1. Have a snack before attending. Showing up to an event starving can lead to overindulgence, then generally digestive discomfort. It also decreases our will power and then there is no stopping us from eating the bad food we can normally avoid or have smaller portions of.
  2. Everything in Moderation! Be selective, chose your favourite and have a small amount. Especially with sugar, during the holidays we are surrounded by sugar. Eating small amounts of your absolute favourites can satisfy your cravings.
  3. At a potluck bring a healthier selection, so you know one thing on the table will be a good for your body.
  4. Stay active, don’t stop exercising just because it’s the holidays. If you can continue your exercise routine. Take a walk after a big meal to help digestion, you will feel better and your gut will love you for it.
  5. If you accidently overindulge, eat sparingly the next day and enjoy lots of detoxifying lemon water to help your digestion and body recovery.
  6. Enjoy the holidays, focus on activities and fun rather than food.

‘Tis the Season to be Stressed Jolly

‘Tis the Season to be Stressed Jolly

By Amanda Delamer, MSc, ACC, CPCC

I was having coffee with a friend last week, and she was talking about how much stress she was feeling just thinking about the holiday season. She even mentioned that she was feeling like the Grinch, not looking forward to the holidays at all. All of a sudden I found myself singing in my head – “‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la, la la, la la”.

So what’s making you feel “Grinchy” and stressed about the upcoming holiday season? Is it all the holiday parties, dinner parties, New Year’s parties, parties to plan for the parties parties? All that noise, noise, noise, noise. What if this holiday season you felt jolly? What if you felt joy?

For me, I get all “grinchy” when I listen to that internal voice telling me I “should” do something. When I hear “should” there is a very good chance that I’ll do the opposite. I feel “jolly” when I’m saying “yes” to what brings me joy. Not running from event to event, getting fresh air and exercise with my family, games nights with my kids, staying in and watching movies, having a few dinners and visits with friends, date nights with my hubby, time to read with a cup of tea…these are a few of the things that bring me such joy.

If there is a “should” attached to your thought, it might be time to just say no. I should stay the full two weeks at my parents, I should go to that holiday party, I should squeeze in that dinner with them, I should… We can should ourselves crazy. It’s not to say those things we think we “should” do are not important, they likely are. It’s just more about asking ourselves what brings us joy, and taking responsibility for creating space for it in our lives.

Knowing what brings us joy, starts with self-awareness. There is a reason that I am so protective over weeknights at home with my family, and why sitting in my favourite chair reading with a cup of tea brings me so much joy. They are aligned with my values. I know that honouring my values on a consistent basis brings me such joy.

So, this holiday season, what would make you jolly – what will bring you JOY?
