About IV Therapy

IV therapy stands for intravenous therapy. Vitamins and minerals are administered directly into the venous system which then allows for 100% absorption into the body – thereby directly flooding the tissues and cells for immediate use. Oral administration of vitamins and minerals (or by mouth) are not as highly absorbed, and even less so if one has any known gastrointestinal issues. Some of these vitamins include those in a Myers cocktail such as B-vitamins, calcium, magnesium, zinc, trace minerals, animo acids, vitamin c, antioxidant-glutathione, and others – based on a patient’s symptoms, and after consultation is completed.

We also offer various IM (intramuscular) injections. These can include B12, and other vitamins necessary for quick absorption, and is also based on each patient’s symptom presentation.

Book a visit with a naturopathic doctor to figure out which treatment may be right for you.

Preparing for an IV and what to expect

Routine blood (within the last year) is required before your first appointment in order to gain a baseline status, as well as assess safety. For more information about what lab work is required, please feel free to contact Docere Wellness Centre reception at [email protected].

Before an IV, it is important to eat a meal, at least enough to feel full before your appointment, as well as to stay hydrated throughout the day. It is also appropriate to bring snacks, juice, or water if you would like to have during the treatment as well, if needed. If you are not already a patient with Docere, a short one-time IV therapy visit is required, in order for the naturopathic doctor to assess symptoms, and health goals, and do a prior assessment before your first IV.

What will I feel during and after treatment and are there side effects?

Everyone is different with how they respond to any treatment, and IV therapy is no different. The most common things reported during a treatment are: increased energy, feeling of calm and less anxiety, and tasting the vitamins in their mouth (due to the capillaries in the tongue). As well, many have reported higher productivity, better sleep, increased immune health, shorter recovery time from illnesses, lowered inflammation, better skin health, and more.

Side effects may include mild hypoglycemia, nausea, fatigue, lightheadedness, headache, phlebitis (slight irritation of the vein in the site of administration), superficial bruising at site of the needle, or an allergy to vitamins or minerals. Most individuals do not have a reaction to vitamin and mineral IV therapy, although if any discomforts or adverse reactions are experienced, the treatment can be stopped at any time. Most feel rested, or have more energy following the treatment for days, or weeks. Very few reported limited, minimal or no changes.
