The Alberta Fall Wellness Reset: 5 Things Your Body Needs Right Now

The Alberta Fall Wellness Reset: 5 Things Your Body Needs Right Now

There’s something about an Alberta fall that makes you realise how quickly the seasons can shift.

One week, you’re enjoying long evenings outdoors. Then suddenly, the mornings are darker, temperatures drop, the furnace comes on, school and work routines are in full swing—and it seems like everyone around you is coughing.

Fall is a beautiful season, but it is also a significant transition for your body.

Less daylight can affect your sleep-wake rhythm. Cooler, drier air changes how we experience our environment. We spend more time indoors, respiratory viruses become more active, and for many people, busy routines return after a slower summer.

And in Alberta, there is another consideration we didn’t have to think about quite as much in previous years: wildfire smoke and air quality.

So instead of waiting until you feel run down, fall can be a good time for a simple wellness reset.

Not a detox.
Not an extreme supplement routine.
Just a check-in with the foundations of your health.

What’s Different About Fall Health Now?

Respiratory health is more complicated

“Cold and flu season” doesn’t tell the whole story anymore.

Influenza, RSV and COVID-19 can all circulate during respiratory-virus season. Alberta’s current 2026–27 respiratory season began in late August, and the province is continuing to monitor these viruses throughout the fall and winter.

That makes prevention more important than simply waiting until illness arrives.

Annual influenza vaccination remains recommended for Albertans six months and older who don’t have a contraindication, while COVID-19 vaccination recommendations are increasingly tailored to age and individual risk.

But vaccination isn’t the only piece.

Staying home when you’re sick, good hand hygiene, ventilation and appropriate masking when needed can all help reduce respiratory-virus transmission.

The goal isn’t to avoid every germ. It’s to reduce your risk and give your body the support it needs.

Your sleep may need a seasonal reset

If you’re feeling more tired as the days get shorter, don’t automatically assume you need another coffee.

Light is one of the strongest signals that helps regulate our circadian rhythm—the internal system that helps coordinate sleep and wakefulness.

Research in Canadian adults has found that seasonal changes themselves may have relatively small effects on sleep, but changes associated with daylight saving time can temporarily affect sleep satisfaction, insomnia symptoms and daytime sleepiness.

This is why a few simple habits can be helpful:

  • Get outside in natural daylight, especially earlier in the day.
  • Keep your wake-up time reasonably consistent.
  • Create a calmer wind-down routine at night.
  • Be mindful of caffeine later in the day.
  • Give yourself enough time to sleep rather than constantly borrowing from tomorrow’s energy.

And if persistent fatigue continues despite adequate sleep, don’t automatically blame the season. It may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

Fall nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated

When the temperature drops, comfort food naturally becomes more appealing.

And that’s okay.

Healthy eating doesn’t mean giving up soups, baked goods, pasta or your favourite fall treats. Canada’s current dietary guidance continues to emphasise nutritious foods while recognising that eating patterns are influenced by culture, cost, access and everyday circumstances.

Instead of focusing on what you need to eliminate, ask what you can add.

Try building meals around:

Protein: eggs, fish, poultry, beans, lentils, tofu or yogurt.

Fibre: vegetables, fruit, oats, whole grains, beans and lentils.

Healthy fats: nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil and fatty fish.

Variety: fresh, frozen and canned produce can all have a place in a healthy diet.

And don’t feel pressured to start an elaborate “immune-boosting” supplement routine.

Your immune system is complex. There isn’t one food, vitamin or supplement that can simply switch it on.

Some people may benefit from specific nutrients depending on their individual circumstances, but more supplements do not automatically mean better health. If you’re considering adding several supplements this fall, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about what actually makes sense for you.

Don’t forget Alberta’s air quality

This is one area where fall wellness looks different than it did years ago.

Wildfire smoke has become a recurring health consideration for many Albertans. Smoke contains fine particles, including PM2.5, that can travel deep into the lungs and contribute to respiratory symptoms.

And you don’t always have to see or smell smoke for air quality to be a concern.

Before heading outside for a long walk or workout, especially during wildfire events, check Alberta’s air-quality information. On poor-air-quality days, consider moving strenuous exercise indoors and using appropriate indoor air filtration.

For many Alberta families, checking the Air Quality Health Index is becoming just as practical as checking the weather.

Your 5-question Fall Wellness Check-In

You don’t need to completely overhaul your routine this October.

Instead, ask yourself:

1. How am I sleeping?
Am I getting enough rest, or relying on caffeine to get through the day?

2. Am I getting enough daylight and movement?
Even a short outdoor walk during daylight can be a worthwhile addition to your day when the weather and air quality allow.

3. What am I eating most days?
Could I add more protein, fibre, vegetables, fruit or nourishing whole foods?

4. How is my stress?
Has my calendar become so full that rest is always the first thing to disappear?

5. Am I prepared for respiratory and air-quality season?
Have I checked my recommended vaccinations and made a plan for staying well when viruses or wildfire smoke are circulating?

A Fall Reset Doesn’t Mean Doing More

There’s a tendency to approach every new season with another challenge, cleanse, supplement or list of things we should be doing.

But your fall wellness reset can be much simpler.

Sleep well.
Eat nourishing food.
Move your body.
Get outside when conditions are good.
Pay attention to your stress.
Stay connected.
And ask for support when something doesn’t feel right.

Your body is already adapting to the changing season.

You don’t need to fight that process. You can support it.

So this fall, instead of asking:

“What do I need to add to my routine?”

Try asking:

“What does my body need more of right now?”

That small shift can be the beginning of a much more sustainable approach to your health.

Did You Know Stress and Energy Shift During Autumn?

Did You Know Stress and Energy Shift During Autumn?

As the leaves turn and Calgary cools into autumn, your body begins its own quiet transformation. The shift in daylight, temperature, and pace can influence your stress levels, energy production, and even your immune strength.

At Docere Wellness Centre, we believe this season is your body’s signal, not to push harder, but to slow down, recalibrate, and realign your natural rhythm.

1. The Hidden Impact of Seasonal Change on Stress and Energy

When seasons shift, so does your body’s biology. Shorter days and colder air can disrupt your circadian rhythm: the internal clock that regulates your hormones, sleep, and energy cycles.

In Calgary, this often shows up as:

  • Afternoon energy slumps

  • Difficulty waking in the morning

  • Heightened anxiety or brain fog

  • Lowered motivation and mood

These aren’t just coincidences, they’re physiological responses to stress and adaptation. Your body is working harder to maintain balance as environmental demands change.

2. The Science Behind the Stress–Energy Connection

Stress isn’t only emotional; it’s deeply biological. When your brain senses change or uncertainty (like a sudden weather drop or busier schedule), it triggers your adrenal glands to release cortisol: your main stress hormone.

Over time, if cortisol remains elevated, it drains your energy reserves, weakens immunity, and throws your sleep and digestion off balance.
This is why many Calgarians report feeling “wired but tired” during autumn, alert but exhausted, mentally busy but physically depleted.

Understanding this mind–body relationship is key to restoring natural energy.

3. Calgary in Autumn: Why You Might Feel More Fatigued

Recent Canadian health surveys reveal that over 50% of respondents experienced higher stress or sleep problems due to changing weather and daylight.

For Calgary residents, this is especially true in late fall, when:

  • Less sunlight reduces Vitamin D and serotonin production

  • Indoor air and temperature fluctuations affect breathing and mood

  • The start of cold and flu season challenges immune resilience

Combine that with the daily demands of work, parenting, or entrepreneurship and your energy can feel stretched thin.

4. Common Fall Health Concerns in Calgary

At Docere Wellness, we often see the same patterns emerge this time of year. Common autumn imbalances include:

  • Seasonal fatigue and burnout

  • Weakened immunity (frequent colds, slow recovery)

  • Mood dips or “autumn blues”

  • Digestive sluggishness from heavier meals

  • Hormonal fluctuations tied to stress and light exposure

Recognizing these early helps you take proactive steps before they become chronic issues.

Fall season adds to stress and energy.

5. Naturopathic Strategies to Restore Balance This Season

Nature offers all the tools your body needs to thrive, especially when guided by personalized naturopathic care.
Here’s how we support your stress and energy naturally at Docere Wellness Centre:

1. Rebalance Your Nervous System

Acupuncture, massage therapy, and breathwork calm your stress response and promote deep relaxation. Our Stress Relief IV Drip, infused with B-vitamins and glycine, helps your body recover from chronic stress and mental fatigue.

2. Eat Seasonally, Fuel Mindfully

Autumn foods like squash, root vegetables, and warming herbs (ginger, turmeric, cinnamon) ground your digestion and boost energy. Pair them with adaptogens like ashwagandha or rhodiola to support your adrenal health.

3. Boost Your Immunity

Reduced sunlight means less Vitamin D, a critical immune and energy nutrient. Our Quick Immune Boost IV and Energy Boost IV therapies combine Vitamin C, B12, and minerals to help strengthen your defenses and vitality.

4. Reset Your Sleep & Rhythm

Light exposure in the morning and screen reduction at night help realign melatonin and cortisol balance. We also recommend herbal support with lemon balm, passionflower, or magnesium glycinate for restorative sleep.

5. Make Space to Breathe

True energy doesn’t come from doing more, it comes from doing what nourishes you. Simple rituals like tea breaks, mindful movement, or journaling invite calm back into your day.

6. A Season to Listen, Not to Push

Your body is incredibly wise. Fatigue, restlessness, or irritability aren’t signs of weakness, they’re invitations to restore alignment.

At Docere Wellness Centre, we help Calgarians reconnect with their body’s natural intelligence. Our integrative, whole-body approach supports not just symptom relief, but true renewal: physically, emotionally, and energetically.

7. Reconnect, Recharge, and Reset This Fall

Let this autumn be your time to rebalance your energy, manage stress, and strengthen your immunity before winter arrives.

Gua Sha: The Ancient Healing Technique for Pain Relief

Gua Sha: The Ancient Healing Technique for Pain Relief

Gua Sha is more than a trend—it’s a powerful healing technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Not only does it help relieve pain, but it also aids in reducing inflammation and improving overall well-being. Moreover, this gentle practice is gaining popularity worldwide due to its effectiveness in promoting natural healing

What is Gua Sha?

A TCM technique where the practitioner gently scrapes the skin with a smooth-edged jade or rose quartz tool. As a result, this method boosts circulation, promotes lymphatic drainage, and enhances the body’s natural healing process. Furthermore, applying light to medium pressure creates temporary redness—called “sha”—which signals improved blood flow and toxin release. In addition, studies show that Gua Sha provides strong anti-inflammatory effects, making it especially beneficial for those with asthma, chronic pain, migraines, and muscle tension.

The Benefits of Gua Sha

By incorporating Gua Sha into your wellness routine, you can experience relief from various health concerns, including:

✅ Relieving muscle tension and stiffness
✅ Enhancing circulation for better skin and overall health
✅ Reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system
✅ Easing headaches, migraines, and chronic pain
✅ Promoting relaxation and reducing stress
✅ Supporting respiratory health, including relief from coughs and congestion

What to Expect During a Treatment

Expect your session with Dr. Marcia Gray at Docere Wellness will be a calming and therapeutic experience. Here’s what you can expect:

Application of Oil: natural, nourishing oil is applied to the treatment area for smooth gliding.
Gentle Scraping Motion: jade stone or specialized Gua Sha tool is used in long, consistent strokes across your skin.
Treatment Duration: Sessions last 15–30 minutes and can be combined with acupuncture or cupping for enhanced results.
Temporary Redness: Light bruising or redness may appear but typically fades within a few days as circulation improves.

Who Can Benefit from It?

Are you struggling with any of the following concerns? Gua Sha is the perfect solution for you:

  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Back pain and muscle stiffness
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress relief and relaxation
  • Immune system support

Post-Treatment Care for Maximum Benefits

To make the most of your Gua Sha session, be sure to follow these simple self-care tips:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and aid detoxification.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours to allow your body to heal.
  • Keep the treated area warm and covered to maintain energy flow.
  • Skip cold foods and drinks, as they can counteract the therapy’s warming effects.

Is It Safe?

When performed by a trained professional, Gua Sha is a safe and effective therapy. Open communication with your practitioner is key—let them know if you need adjustments in pressure to ensure a comfortable experience.
